Quit drinking savings calculator: how much will you save?

Put in what you spend on alcohol and see what quitting keeps in your pocket. If you already quit, add your quit date to see what you have kept so far.

Before you stop: if you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor first. Alcohol withdrawal can become life-threatening (MedlinePlus). For free, confidential help finding treatment, call SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357.

The $50 a week filled in is only an example, not an average. Change it to what you spend.

What to count

Count drinks from the store and drinks at bars and restaurants, with tips, delivery and rides home. Leave out food you would buy anyway.

How the math works

The calculator turns what you spend into a daily amount, then multiplies it out:

For example, $10 a day is $70 a week, about $304 a month, $3,650 a year and $18,250 in 5 years. The calculator keeps your price the same every year and adds no price rises, interest or tax.

Track it every day

The free Fogless tracker asks what your habit cost per day and counts the money you keep from your quit date, every day, next to your day count and milestones. It runs in your browser with no account, and your data stays on your device.

Questions

Should I count drinks at bars and restaurants?

Yes. Count what you spend on drinks everywhere: stores, bars, restaurants, delivery and tips.

I only drink on weekends. How do I enter that?

Add up what a typical weekend costs you, enter that amount and pick per week.

How is the monthly amount worked out?

The calculator turns what you spend into a daily amount, then multiplies it by 365 and divides by 12. That is an average month of about 30.4 days. For example, $10 a day comes to about $304 a month.

Does it count price rises or interest?

No. It uses the price you enter for every year and adds no price rises, interest or tax, so treat the result as a plain estimate.

What if I am cutting down instead of quitting?

Enter only the part you will stop spending. If you go from $10 a day to $4 a day, enter $6 a day.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. The math runs in your browser. Nothing you enter leaves the page, and it is gone when you close it.
